Behind The Cellar Door FAQ

BTCD is a boutique importer focused on a tightly curated portfolio of wines from independent, family-owned producers. We work with on-premise and off-premise accounts to build focused, commercially successful wine programs—offering a clear, reliable approach to managing wine selection and performance across the Michigan market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pricing

Wholesale pricing ranges, margins, and how we handle discounts.

What are the typical wholesale prices for your wines?

Our portfolio spans a broad range of price points to support by-the-glass programs, retail shelves, and premium placements. We focus on delivering strong value and consistency at each level, with pricing structured to support sustainable margins and long-term program stability.

Do you offer discounts or deals?

We price wines to deliver value from the outset and prioritize consistency over short-term discounting. We offer occasional features, but our focus is on stable pricing that supports predictable performance.

Working With Us

What it looks like to partner with us in Michigan.

How does your import and distribution model work?

We import directly from a focused group of producers and manage logistics, compliance, warehousing, and distribution. In Michigan, the wines we represent are available through us within the market, supported by a consistent supply chain and established distribution network.

All wines are handled under temperature-controlled conditions—from refrigerated shipping to climate-controlled storage—which helps maintain quality from the producer’s cellar through delivery.

How do you support on-premise and off-premise accounts?

Our focus is on building clear, well-performing wine programs rather than relying on frequent tastings. We take a curated approach—working with you to understand your goals and bringing forward wines that fit your list or shelf.

Programs vary—some rotate by-the-glass selections or retail shelves frequently, while others prioritize consistency. We are structured to support both, ensuring availability and continuity so wines perform without disruption.

How do you help new restaurants or bars launch a wine program?

We take a structured approach—reviewing the concept, setting pricing and margin targets, and building a focused, balanced list. We prioritize wines that perform consistently and refine the program as it develops, supported by ongoing account relationships and market feedback.

Portfolio and Producers

How we handle BTG wines, arrivals, inventory flow, and tastings.

How do you choose which wineries and producers to work with?

We focus on identifying strong, representative wines within each category—wines that deliver clear identity, consistency, and value—while remaining aligned with the realities of the market.

What makes your wine portfolio different?

Our portfolio is tightly curated and intentionally focused. We avoid broad, commoditized brands and instead represent wines that show character, consistency, and a strong sense of place.

This allows us to serve as a consistent source for wines that integrate naturally into well-structured programs across a range of accounts.

How is BTCD different from other distributors?

We operate with a deliberately focused portfolio and a program-driven approach. Rather than presenting an extensive range of options, we concentrate on bringing forward a consistent set of wines that work together and perform over time, supported by established relationships across both producers and customers.

Programs and Logistics

How we handle BTG wines, arrivals, inventory flow, and tastings.

What wines work best for by‑the‑glass programs?

Successful by-the-glass wines are driven by saleability—consistent quality, strong value, and the ability to move reliably. The focus is on wines that support margin, repeat orders, and guest acceptance.

How often do new wines arrive?

Shipments arrive weekly. Our business model is built on getting inventory in and moving it efficiently—we are not structured to hold long-term inventory. Our focus is on maintaining steady availability and getting wines into customers’ hands as quickly as possible.

How can accounts learn more about your wines?

We focus on education and program alignment—reviewing the portfolio, discussing categories, and identifying how wines fit within your list or shelf.

We’re always happy to taste through wines together when it’s useful in that process.

Support and Next Steps

We would welcome the opportunity to work with you to identify wines that align with your goals and perform consistently within your program. Our focus is on building wine lists and assortments that are clear, reliable, and designed to support long-term success.
