About Behind the Cellar Door Imports

About Us

Behind the Cellar Door Imports is a boutique wine importing and distribution company focused on sourcing distinctive, high‑quality wines from independent producers around the world. Founded on the belief that great wine should be both expressive and accessible, we prioritize wines that deliver a genuine sense of place without relying on corporate scale or inflated pricing.

Much of our portfolio comes from family‑owned wineries and small, independently operated estates. These are producers closely connected to their vineyards, regions, and traditions, resulting in wines that offer real character, authenticity, and story—even at approachable price points.

Our approach is intentionally selective. Rather than building a broad, commoditized catalog, we curate a focused portfolio of producers who share our commitment to quality, consistency, and integrity. We view ourselves as long‑term partners to our wineries, working collaboratively on market positioning and sustainable growth while preserving what makes each wine distinctive.

For our customers, this means access to wines that consistently overdeliver—wines chosen with care, represented with integrity, and valued for the story they tell from vineyard to glass.

Our Philosophy

Behind the Cellar Door Imports is built around the belief that great wine doesn’t require corporate scale or luxury pricing. We work primarily with family‑owned wineries and independent producers who are deeply connected to their land, their regions, and their craft. By staying selective and relationship‑driven, we’re able to offer wines that deliver real character, authenticity, and sense of place—even at approachable price points. Every wine we represent is chosen for its quality, integrity, and the story it tells from vineyard to glass.

Our Catalog Selections

We offer a wide range of wines from different regions of the world, such as France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United States, and Argentina. Explore our Producers by Country menu to learn more about each winery!

Featured Wine

2024 Tavignano Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi “Villa Torre”

Brilliant straw yellow with golden accents. Fragrant on the nose, yellow blossom, fresh apricots, with a hint of pineapple and guava. Fresh on the palate, then quickly reveals the ripe fruit, with plenty of drive, becoming slightly salty on the finish.

Featured Winery

Tenuta di Tavignano

Tenuta di Tavignano is a forward‑thinking estate in the heart of the Castelli di Jesi, rooted in certified organic farming and long‑term stewardship of its land. Respecting natural cycles and intervening minimally, the estate emphasizes soil health, biodiversity, and expressive viticulture. Set between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines, the vineyards are managed parcel by parcel to capture the nuances of altitude, exposure, and soil, with a young, dynamic team overseeing meticulous work in the rows and careful selection of fruit at harvest. In the cellar, a gentle, detail‑driven approach—cool fermentations, restrained use of oak, and extended lees contact where appropriate—seeks to preserve varietal purity and the distinctive character of Verdicchio and other native grapes.
